UNIVERSITY OF KHARTOUM
The Department of Archaeology at the University of Khartoum was established by the Board of the Faculty of Arts in 1964. Initially for postgraduate teaching, it offered a Higher Diploma in Egyptology, supervised by Prof. Mustafa Amir. One class of 4 students graduated, including the late Akasha Mohammed Ali, later Deputy Director General of the Sudan Antiquities Service.Subsequently, with Prof. Peter Shinnie as Head of Department (1965-70), the Department taught Archaeology to Honours students of the Department of History, with 9 students graduating in 1970.
Two of these, Ali Osman and Abbas SidAhmed Zarroug became Teaching Assistants in the Department under the next Head of Department, Dr. Abdel Gadir Mohammed who initiated a new BA in Archaeology. Dr. Abdel Gadir Mohammed was succeeded by Prof. Ali Hakim on completion of his PhD at Cambridge, England.
The Department is currently headed by Prof Ali Osman M. Salih. It has had field projects at Meroe, in the Bauda-Sarurab region north of Omdurman, and on the Red Sea coast and is currently engaged in projects in the Third Cataract region of north Sudan and at Meroe, with further associated projects, for example along the White Nile (Dr. Khidr Adam Eisa).
